Many families living in Florence would like to be able to grow some of their own vegetables and herbs, but are just not able because they are not fortunate enough to have a sunny yard or terrace. For some people, they would like to be able to save on their food bill; for others they simply like the freshness and flavor of homegrown produce. And still for others they enjoy gardening because it is an outdoor activity that is a relaxing way to get exercise.
Community gardens beautify a neighborhood and help to bring neighbors closer together. It has been proven that community gardens help to reduce neighborhood crime. Community gardens can also be an outdoor classroom to teach young people about important environment issues. For these reasons, community gardens have been sprouting up all over the world.
It is very exciting that a new community garden is being developed here in Florence.
